A proposed “social contract” for reconciliation consists of “just sheets of paper” and requires cooperation from all parties involved in order to achieve the goal, the spokesman for the government’s reconciliation-building committee said on Monday.

Maj-General Kongcheep Tantrawanit, who also serves as the Defence Ministry spokesman, said the committee – chaired by Deputy Premier and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan – had endorsed a proposal submitted by Army chief General Chalermchai Sutthisart at its meeting on Monday.

However, in order to achieve reconciliation in line with the guidelines in the proposed social contract, the people involved need to help prevent conflicts and violence that could happen in the future, the spokesman stressed.

The draft social contract will be put before public hearings to be held at the Army Area commands in each of the four main regions of the country – in Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phitsanulok and Nakhon Si Thammarat – between June 27 and July 7.
